Become a mentor

My Voice, My Power! is a group mentorship program that supports self-identified girls and gender diverse youth to develop skills that support gender-based violence prevention. This pilot project will be provided for participants in Grade 4 and 5 in schools in Port Moody, Burnaby and Surrey in Fall 2024 and expand to include grades 6-8 in various Metro Vancouver schools in 2025.

Being a My Voice, My Power! mentor, you will get the opportunity to:

Connect with self-identified girls and gender-diverse youth to help build communities that are supportive, inclusive and safe
Support participants to explore their identities, rights, and boundaries
Ignite the power and potential of youth teaching young people to advocate for themselves and others
Encourage youth to feel confident and hopeful about their future
Improve your leadership, group facilitation, communication and interpersonal skills in a school environment
Become part of the Big Sisters’ My Voice, My Power! community

Step One: General Information
This eight-session group mentoring program is facilitated by 2-3 volunteer mentors who are screened and trained by Big Sisters staff. Research-based curriculum is provided by Big Sisters, and we encourage our mentors to be flexible with programming in order to meet the emerging needs of participants.

My Voice, My Power! helps participants:
- Gain an understanding of systemic inequalities in an empowering and positive environment
- Enhance their competence, confidence, and self-esteem
- Learn about healthy relationships, boundary setting, internet safety.
- Build their leadership and life skills
Mentors use the program curriculum to lead activities and discussions for a group of 8-10 participants.
Step Two: Requirements
To become a My Voice, My Power Mentor, you should be:
- 19+ years of age
- A woman, non-binary, transgender or gender-diverse individual
- Canadian resident for the past year (or able to provide an International Criminal Records Check)
- Available at least one consistent weekday for the eight-week term (Tues/Wed/or Thurs) typically between 2:30-5:30pm. (Two hours in the program and an additional hour for prep and debrief.)
- Passionate about gender equity, education and supporting self-identifying girls, non-binary, transgender and gender-diverse youth
- Reliable, resourceful, and interested in building relationships with children
- As we work with vulnerable populations, vaccinations are highly recommended but not required
Step Three: Apply Now!

We warmly welcome applications year-round from those who would like to become a mentor for My Voice, My Power!. We value all applicants and will be in contact on a first-come, first-served basis for the upcoming term.

If we are unable to place you in the Fall 2024 term, we will hold onto your application for the Winter 2025 term. *There is a condensed process for current Big Sisters programs’ mentors: please contact Alaina Soucie directly at asoucie@bigsisters.bc.ca.

Next Steps

You will receive a confirmation email when you submit your application. When we process your application, you will receive an email to let you know that your references will be contacted.

Once your application has been processed, a My Voice, My Power! Program Coordinator will be in touch with you to schedule an interview. After your interview, we will confirm your registration in the My Voice, My Power! training session.

Once your references, criminal record check, and training are complete, your application will be reviewed for acceptance. Your Program Coordinator will provide you with ongoing support and check-ins during your placement.
